Isotope Production Accelerators Report Card

Abstract of the technical paper/presentation given at:
Canadian Radiation Protection Association (CRPA) Annual Conference
April 30–May 3, 2018

Abstract:

Although the CNSC publishes data on incidents, compliance trends and worker doses in the regulatory oversight report on nuclear substances and radiation devices, many licensees and stakeholders have indicated that some of the data is too broad to be of use as a facility-specific comparator.

In an effort to encourage licensees’ ALARA efforts and foster discussions within the cyclotron community, the CNSC has created a report card for isotope production accelerators. It includes summaries of the non-compliances found in the cyclotron sector during inspection activities, annual worker doses normalized to production, highlights of events with high learning value reported to the CNSC and others. The reports are customized for each facility. All data except for the report recipient’s is anonymized.

Following positive feedback from licensees selected to receive the pilot report, the remaining Class II licensees who operate an isotope production accelerator will receive a report card by the end of April 2018. This presentation will show a sample isotope report card, as well as graphs and findings.
