Order issued to Cool Beer Brewing Co. Incorporated

October 1, 2021

The CNSC has issued an order to Cool Beer Brewing Co. Incorporated, a company based in Toronto, Ontario. The company currently holds a licence authorizing the possession, transfer, use and storage of fixed nuclear gauges, containing nuclear substances, for the purpose of monitoring production processes and ensuring quality control.

The order was issued following a CNSC onsite inspection conducted on September 24, 2021, and a follow-up onsite verification conducted on September 28, 2021, at the licensee’s facility in Toronto.

The combined observations from these onsite verification activities identified that there is currently no trained Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) appointed who can provide an acceptable level of oversight to ensure safe operation and maintenance of the licensee’s fixed nuclear gauge and who can implement any emergency procedures related to this device. The previous RSO left the company earlier this year.

The order requires the licensee to immediately cease the use of its fixed nuclear gauge until a qualified individual, acceptable to the CNSC, has been appointed by the licensee to serve as the RSO and until it can be demonstrated, to the satisfaction of the CNSC, that the licensee has management control over work practices, that workers are adequately trained, and that the gauge has undergone a current leak test.
